Many of the Regency ornate chessmen stand out for the additions our designers and craftsmen have made. Our Contemporary Series, though, is defined by its commitment to a stripping back of the detail, to create bold, confident pieces that belie the ancient traditions of the game they represent.

The king is the best example of this, differing from the queen with merely a small, yet imposing, crown.

The ebonised boxwood on the darker pieces is hand-polished to ensure a sharp finish, while the lighter pieces are carved from graded boxwood.

Chess boards of 18 inches (45 cm) or more are the best suited to accommodate these pieces. The Contemporary Series Chessmen sit definitively on large bases that are covered with protective felt. The 3.75-inch (95 mm) king covers 1.3 inches (34 mm) at its base.
