Highly detailed and superbly finished, these 1849 Reproduction Staunton chessmen are handcrafted in high-quality ebony and boxwood.

At 11.2cm, the king is an imposing figure with his intricate finial and double banding on his collar. He, along with his supporting army, is perfectly weighted for balance, and billiard cloth covers their bases to protect your board.

You will notice that the kings in this set are branded at the base with the words “Staunton 1849”. These ebony reproduction pieces also bear the original markings of the king's crown on 1 black knight, 1 black rook, 1 white knight and 1 white rook, and, as we know, these pieces will sit on the king's flank. This was a practical innovation to identify their position on the king’s side of the board.
