Created by the same chess workshop that produces some of the world's finest chessmen, these stunning chess pieces have been turned from solid wood then painstakingly carved with beautiful detailing. Superbly finished, these 1849 Reproduction Staunton Chessmen, with the 11.18 cm kings, are handcrafted in high quality
ebony and boxwood in the world famous and classic
Staunton design.
At 11.18 cm, the king is a stately figure with his intricate finial and double banding on his collar. He, along with his supporting army, is perfectly weighted for balance and billiard cloth covers their bases to protect your board.
You will notice that the kings in this set are branded at the base with the words "Staunton 1849"Â. These ebony reproduction pieces also bear the original markings of the kings crown on one black knight, one black rook, one white knight and one white rook and, as we know, these pieces will sit on the Kings flank. This was a practical innovation to identify their position on the King's side of the board. This is because, in descriptive chess notation, the rooks and knights were often referred to as being the ‘queens knight, or the ‘king's rook'.
The high quality grade of ebony and boxwood used to create it, makes this set, not only an enviable acquisition but also a fantastic investment and stunning heirloom for future generations.
For the king's height and broad base in this set, these lovely chess men have been matched with this extra large, high quality Montgoy palisander (
Rosewood) and maple veneer chess board. Produced in Spain by one of the world's most prestigious manufacturers, the deepest red grain of this particular type of rosewood is magnificent; the attention to detail and meticulous edging superb. Finished in an eggshell low sheen lacquer, this board is perfect for these larger chess pieces.
If you can bear to put your pieces away whilst not in use, this beautifully made chess piece case is the perfect accompaniment to this luxury set.Crafted from mahogany, this beautiful box has deep reddish hues, which are complemented by the brass hinges and lock. Currently this is the only lockable box that we stock.The interior is fully lined with green flocking to protect your prize pieces when not in play. It is important to note that they will only fit lying down which is quite normal. Wooden pieces are hardwood and will come to no harm.
